Apples were first grown in England in Roman times. Were these early varieties like? Were they sweet and eaten raw or were they small and sour, similar to crab apples, used in cooking to accompany white meat, or were they used manly to make cider as a substitute for wine, Grapes can only be grown in favoured locations in the south of England whilst apples can be grown in most parts of the country except in upland areas.
